New Jersey Patent of the Month – March 2022
Sunscreen is the ultimate tool to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation. You might think you only need it when at the beach, but the more you protect yourself, the safer you are. Excessive exposure can lead to sunburns and eventually to melanoma. The quality of sunscreen is integral to the quality of protection. For instance, most organic sunscreens degrade under prolonged exposure to UV radiation.
Vizor, LLC has committed themselves to formulating a high SPF, organic sunscreen that can stand up to the sun long term. Vizor is an experienced R&D firm with over 50 years of combined experience in personal care.
They identified the causal limitations within existing sunscreen formulations and made corrections to improve performance. Recent research has found that microfine zinc oxide and titanium oxide are capable of deflecting both UVA and UVB type radiation. However, these particles have not yet been able to be combined in a manner sufficient enough to meet SPF standards. With Vizor’s formulation, these micronized metal oxide particles are prepared by adding an oil dispersant-free coating with PHA (poly[C8-C20 hydroxycarboxylic acid]). When prepared this way the company found SPF values doubled as did the length of efficacy.
This formulation can be incorporated into cosmetic products, providing lip balms or foundations with built in SPF protection or used as a stand alone sunscreen.
