New York Patent of the Month – June 2022

After being in operation for a long time, an oil well begins to lose its efficiency and productivity. This loss can render an entire well economically unfeasible despite a large volume of crude oil still being available. Hydroacoustics, Inc. (HAI) has developed a way to recover this oil using their proprietary underwater acoustic systems.

This research and development company was founded in 1972, initially dedicating their expertise to improving national military defenses with acoustic technology innovations. These research efforts have led to the generation of underwater acoustic vibrating energy from hydraulic and pneumatic systems, underwater remotely operated vehicles, diver interdiction/swimmer neutralization systems, and aquaculture predator protection.

Their recently patented oil recovery system generates acoustic waves to stimulate oil recovery within a reservoir. The electrically powered tool uses a brushless motor which receives pressurized fluid. This fluid then turns a rotor which generates seismic waves. By imparting seismic wave energy within the reservoir, the capillary forces of any residual oil are altered. The altered state of the oil’s capillary forces can be more easily recovered by the well.

The device is placed down-hole, helping to assist existing oil wells even as they begin to lose effectiveness. The frequency of seismic waves can also be altered, allowing it to be tuned to the individual characteristics of a field or reservoir.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
