North Carolina Patent of the Month – October 2021

Environmentally conscious actions are becoming more and more important as we experience the impacts of climate change. This includes improving protective measures such as removing contaminants from groundwater and stormwater drainage areas. In recent years, there has been a large focus on cleaning up contaminated groundwater surrounding dump sites. Tersus Environmental, LLC develops technology-based solutions to increase remediation efforts and reduce remediation costs.Recently, they have focused on developing a system to remove the following contaminants from soil and groundwater:

  • NAPLs
  • Chlorinated Solvents
  • Petroleum Hydrocarbons
  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs)
  • Pesticides
  • Metals

Their system uses a mixture made of ferrous sulfide to clean up in-situ chemicals found in subsoil. The ferrous sulfide is supplied into soil-pathways and triggers biogeochemical reactions amongst the chemicals. Then an organic hydrogen donor is added to the soil pathways and produces anaerobic conditions to stimulate a certain set of microorganisms. These further the biodegradation process. This dissolves and disposes of the contaminants within the soil to their base parts, readily removing harmful substances from the groundwater and improving the health of the environment.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
