Ohio Patent of the Month – May 2022

Latex is the preferred paint for architectural services because it offers lower toxicity and lower volatile organic compound (VOC) content than other options. The key downfall to latex is its poor stain resistance. While they are known to stain easily, they are also known to not be easily washed. As such, despite being the preferred paint choice, they have largely been limited to ceilings or low traffic areas. SwimC, LLC has formulated a latex paint that is still low toxicity but now also washable.

This formulation is accomplished using latex polymers which balance the acid content and molecular weight to increase washability and stain resistance. Creating an alkali-soluble polymer stabilizes the composition while increasing stain resistance. Additional additives can be used to increase scrub resistance so that the paint can be washed without scratching. The formulation maintains its low toxicity and low VOC content while improving the usability in any household.
