Ohio Patent of the Month – September 2023

Optic neuritis occurs when inflammation damages the optic nerve. This is often associated with multiple sclerosis, viral infections, and other autoimmune disorders. Often, optic neuritis is treated with intravenous corticosteroids. Unfortunately, this rarely leads to a return to normal visual function. Multi Radiance Medical is working to address this, applying photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) to treat optic neuritis and return vision to those affected.

PBMT employs the power of light to stimulate a therapeutic response within the eye. The method involves strategically placing a sophisticated light source device near the patient’s eye. This device, be it in the form of an eye patch, goggles, or glasses, harbors a printed circuit board equipped with an array of light delivery devices. A flexible silicone lens, adorned with heat-dissipating ridges, ensures optimal functioning of these light delivery devices.

Once in position, the light source device directs a focused light signal into the patient’s eye, leveraging varied operating modes—pulsed, continuous, or super-pulsed—to initiate the therapeutic response. This phototherapeutic reaction within the eye is the key to potential healing and recovery for the patient.

A critical advantage of this approach is its non-invasiveness. As stated, traditional treatments involving corticosteroids have limitations in restoring visual function. PBMT, on the other hand, offers a safe, non-intrusive, and effective path to potentially restoring normal visual function. It can even complement traditional treatments for a more comprehensive approach to healing.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
