Vermont Patent of the Month – December 2023

Concepts NREC, LLC has been working with the world’s leading OEMs to improve performance and manufacturability of their turbomachines since 1956. This commitment to innovation has recently culminated in a newly granted patent for flow control structures in turbomachines.

Turbomachines are often met with losses in strength and character when parameters, like flow rate and inlet temperature, fall out of the desired tolerance ranges. When these losses surpass thresholds, it can lead to flow separation and poor performance. Concepts NREC’s flow control structure improves performance and mitigates these losses before they can build up.

The flow control structures improve the flow guiding channels and partial height vanes. The design uses a bladed impeller fluidly communicating with downstream diffusers. Losses are most commonly introduced in this impeller flow field. The bladed impeller limits these real-world effects by reducing surface friction and maintaining a consistent flow path. This design solution has proven effective in improving performance in both the short and long term.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
