Vermont Patent of the Month – June 2022

Under bed storage is a convenient thing for many folks and, due to its popularity, has influenced the design of bed frames for years. Most bed frames are designed so that their bed spring can be adjusted to increase or decrease the height. While this seems convenient, most designs require the user to disassemble the frame and reposition the bed spring every time they want to change the height. New England Woodcraft, Inc. has recently patented their new bed frame design which uses a reversible spring assembly so there is no disassembly required.

Their spring assembly has a series of springs arranged in rows within the rectangle frame. Made of steel, the spring bed is rigid enough to support a sleeper while still providing comfort. The structure can be inverted between two positions, making it effectively reversible. The user can adjust the height of the bed whenever they desire, switching between a loft and a normal position. The bed spring can simply be switched between “right-side-up” and “inverted” positions, which shifts the frame up or down.

New England Woodcraft, Inc. has been a leading custom contract furniture manufacturer since 1961. The company started out designing and fabricating coffee tables before moving into the business of high-quality, solid hardwood residence hall furniture. This change also moved the company’s clientele from craft show patrons to universities, colleges and military bases.
