Washington Patent of the Month – October 2023

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an infection of the liver which affects millions of people worldwide. Cocrystal Pharma, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company, is working to leverage their core competencies to develop treatments for viral infections. One treatment in their pipeline is focused on tackling HCV, utilizing direct acting antiviral drugs (DAAs) to target all HCV genotypes.

HCV is a complex and rapidly mutating virus, making it difficult to develop effective treatments. The currently approved therapies, which include interferon-based regimens, often come with unpleasant side effects and varying success rates, especially depending on the HCV genotype.

Cocrystal Pharma’s approach for treating HCV addresses the need for more efficient and tolerable treatment options. This method involves a combination therapy that includes “Compound A” – one of Cocrystal Pharma’s proprietary pharmaceuticals – and a second HCV inhibitor, such as NS5B, NS5A, or protease inhibitors. The key to this innovative approach lies in the synergistic effect of combining different classes of inhibitors, which can enhance treatment efficacy.

This method isn’t limited to the treatment of HCV genotypes alone; it offers hope for those who are co-infected with HIV or HBV, broadening the spectrum of treatment possibilities. Moreover, the treatment duration is shorter than traditional therapies, lasting just four to eight weeks in some cases.
