Delaware Patent of the Month – June 2022

Oxygen Confectionary Corp. has a relatable start. The founder was playing basketball when he wanted a piece of gum but didn’t want his sweaty, dusty hands to touch the gum before he put it in his mouth. He also didn’t want any additional pieces to fall out of the container, since he would then have to put them back… with his sweaty, dusty hands. This simple experience led to the idea to reinvent gum dispensers.

Their recently patented design ensures there is no unnecessary handling of gum, creating a more hygienic experience for all. The dispenser is set up with a gum storage chamber, a funnel, and a spring actuated drawer. A single piece is funneled into this draw and the user pushes a slider to open the drawer. The user can toss the gum into their mouth or hand, depending on personal preference, and the drawer closes again once the slider is released.

The dispenser is refillable and lockable, ensuring this is not a single use plastic. The company has gone through numerous iterations in development to get this design just right. It’s through this iterative process that they developed and included a carrying groove and guard rail which is positioned so that gum cannot fall into the space where the drawer sits when it has been extended out. This ensures the drawer can always close properly. A lock was also incorporated so there’s no chance of gum falling out when stored away. Their design is refillable, ensuring it won’t be a single use plastic and has minimal impact on the environment.
