Iowa Patent of the Month – August 2022

Pelvic prolapse affects 1 in 5 women in the United States. This is a condition where one or more organs within the pelvis slip down from their normal position, bulging into the vagina. While not life threatening, the condition comes with serious pain and discomfort. It can be caused by weakened pelvic muscles and is often seen years after childbirth, after a hysterectomy, or even after menopause. Surgical treatments involve the placement of mesh within the area, closing the pelvic floor muscles. BraceAbility, Inc. has designed a non-invasive treatment option, allowing those afflicted to get better without interrupting their day to day life.

Their design uses a treatment belt with supportive wrapping that sits like underwear. A comfortable fabric crosses the private area while a belt rests on the hips. Various through-holes allow the compression padding to be positioned over the pelvic floor muscle, creating upward and inward pressure. Straps are pulled through the through-holes to increase or decrease pressure and adjust the belt to your size. The design is subtle, able to be worn under or over clothing, depending on personal preference. The compression ensures the pelvic muscle has enough support to prevent further prolapse or pressure from any dropped organs. At the same time, the compression acts as a type of therapy to relieve the associated aches and pains. Designed by women, for women, the belt does everything it can to let you go about your day without further harm.
