Minnesota Patent of the Month – November 2022

Medibotics, LLC, a Minnesota tech startup, has recently patented their Smile-Through™ masks. These smart face masks improve air filtration and provide a transparent covering.

Face masks and air-filters quickly became part of our everyday lives during mask mandates. While these mandates have passed and most have returned to their usual maskless days, many still opt to don a mask when sick. Unfortunately, the widely available passive filtration masks have significant disadvantages. From poor air filtration to uncomfortable humidity and heat on the interior, many found wearing a mask to be discomforting. They are also traditionally opaque, cutting off some types of communication.

Medibotics’ design is a transparent mask that improves on air filtration and comfort. The design is lightweight and uses a quiet air filtration system to filter both air inflow and outflow. This effectively reduces the spread of airborne diseases both from and to the wearer. A fan within this filtration system maintains airflow and circulation despite the impermeability of the transparent mouth-covering portion.

The smart controls allow the wearer to adjust the fan as needed. Certain sensors are also included to track and monitor biometric data like body temperature, humidity, and blood oxygen. Reducing the airflow can save power. When the person is in need of extra air, they can increase the airflow.

This medical tech company is responsible for a range of useful developments including motion recognition clothing, electricity generating clothing and sound masking. This new smart Smile-Through™ mask will join their product portfolio, advancing their offerings.
