People with restricted mobility often find challenges in day-to-day tasks. Those with restricted shoulder mobility – whether from age, injury, or other conditions – might find it difficult to put on a jacket as they may be unable to reach the second sleeve.
Reachable Solutions, Inc. is focused on creating solutions that make the world more accessible to all. In order to reach this goal, they are developing a suite of assistive devices that function to allow individuals to regain independence of their lives in a multi-faceted manner. This commitment to innovation has resulted in a new patent for their JacketJoy – a product meant to make jackets easy for anyone.
The device can be added to any jacket and is versatile enough to suit nearly any range of mobility. The device takes the shape of a collapsible bar with magnetic connectors at each end. These magnetic ends are attached to the shoulders of a jacket, using the magnetic connectors to secure the hold. This creates a stiff bar across the shoulders that forces the jacket to hold its form. The user can slip one sleeve on as usual. The stiff bar will then force the jacket to the other side, making it easier to reach the remaining sleeve. Once the jacket is on, the magnetic connectors can be disengaged and the bar removed, folded, and stored away.
Through extensive user testing, the device has proven to be user intuitive and effective. In fact, after running over 100 initial tests with test-users, Reachable Solutions found the device made putting on a jacket up to 27 times faster. 58% of these users were unable to put a jacket on without assistance prior to this.
