New Mexico Patent of the Month – December 2023

Ultrafast lasers are often used in biochemistry, physics, and electrical engineering. These systems generate laser pulses with durations of ten picoseconds or less and are used to explore kinetics in proteins, examine carrier relaxation in semiconductors, or image through turbid media, amongst other applications. Methods of measuring these ultrafast and ultrashort pulses are often limited and fail to deliver usable data.

Mesa Photonics, LLC is working to reduce these limitations through the development of optical pulse measuring technologies. Their solution is a pulse analysis system that uses a frequency filter which receives an ultrafast pulse under test and disperses the pulse under test over a set frequency range. The filter separates the pulse under test into slices which can be detected and analyzed for sonogram characteristics. This approach makes it possible to obtain group delay information which provides additional data for determining the phase of the input pulse.

MesaPhotonics contributes to the ongoing narrative of progress in photonics. As a key player in this domain, their commitment to innovation aligns with the ever-growing demand for advanced optical solutions in diverse industries.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
