New York Patent of the Month – July 2023

In today’s fast-paced world, getting a good night’s sleep is more important than ever. Sleep plays a crucial role in our overall health and well-being, affecting our physical, mental, and emotional states. Recognizing the significance of sleep, Eight Sleep, Inc. has developed an innovative sensor system built into a mattress that aims to revolutionize the way we understand and improve our sleep patterns.

The sensor system, comprised of a circuit board and a piezoelectric sensor, is designed to detect and measure various biological signals associated with a user’s sleep. Whether it’s monitoring respiration signals, heart signals, or other indicators of sleep quality, this technology provides valuable insights into how users are sleeping. By accurately tracking these signals, the sensor system can help individuals understand their sleep patterns and make informed decisions to enhance their sleep quality.

Utilizing a flexible printed circuit board, the system can seamlessly adapt to the contours of different furniture pieces – like neds. The piezoelectric sensor, coupled to the circuit board, can detect stress applied to it, generating biological signals that reflect the user’s sleep state. With its ability to conform to various surfaces, this sensor system ensures accurate and reliable measurements, providing users with precise data about their sleep patterns.

Eight Sleep’s sensor system goes beyond sleep tracking by integrating with other technologies. For instance, it can communicate with adjustable beds equipped with heating or cooling capabilities. By analyzing the gathered biological signals and environmental factors like temperature and humidity, the system can automatically adjust the bed’s settings to create an optimal sleep environment. This personalized approach to sleep improvement showcases the potential of combining advanced sensor technology with smart furniture.

Eight Sleep has implemented their own sensor technology in their Pod Mattress. By responding to sensed biological data, the mattress can control temperature on both sides of the bed and wake a sleeper up with gentle vibrations. As the sensors gather a detailed sleep history, these actions are improved and personalized.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
