Oregon Patent of the Month – December 2023

Phoseon Technology, Inc. has been designing and pioneering LED technology since 2002. Their technology has been used primarily in UV industrial curing and life science applications. Recently, the company has been granted a patent for a novel pivoted elliptical reflector.

Phoseon Technology’s LED systems are often used in photosensitive media curing – from coatings to preservatives. Attempts at curved reflectors in the past have been made, but these often required unfeasibly large reflectors to collect the flux of the light source and results in reduced irradiation. Phoseon Technology’s approach uses a specialized, elliptical design to overcome this.

The reflector is designed with a curved reflector and a cylindrical optic, to increase irritation and illumination within a UV photo reactive system. The curved reflector focuses light energy onto the desired surface. The cylindrical optic reduces angular spread, allowing for a smaller overall design.

The company has been committed to innovation since its inception. With a growing portfolio of LED UV curing products, the company expects the next decade will bring new applications, materials, and capabilities which were once thought impossible.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
