Oregon Patent of the Month – July 2022

A hydrogen generation assembly converts different feedstocks into a product stream with hydrogen gas. While the hydrogen generation is fairly efficient, the final product often has impurities and needs to be purified. Element 1 Corp. has developed a new hydrogen generation system with built in hydrogen purification capabilities.

The devices are designed to receive feedstocks – one which contains water and one which contains carbon. These feedstocks are vaporized and fed into the hydrogen-producing region. This region contains a reforming catalyst which, combined with the vapor feed and heat, generates hydrogen. The hydrogen is then moved into a purification region. This region produces two separate product streams – one hydrogen-rich and the other with the remaining gaseous constituents. The purification process uses hydrogen-selective membranes, chemical carbon monoxide removal assemblies, and/or pressure swing adsorption systems.

Element 1 was founded in 2010 by industry experts. They used their experience and knowledge in hydrogen generation to build technology that would advance the clean energy sector. Their hydrogen generation systems aim to support the fuel cell industry. Their expertise extends into small-scale reactor designs and membrane hydrogen purifiers, allowing them to tackle some of the fundamental challenges that have limited the large-scale adoption of hydrogen as a fuel source.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
