Pennsylvania Patent of the Month – September 2022

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) can result from a blow or jolts to the head. This can be devastating to our loved ones as it can cause dizziness or balance disorders, and in more severe cases, changes in personality. To receive proper treatment, it is incredibly important to accurately diagnose the structures affected. Typically, balance and neurological tests often require the use of large stationary systems. While this may be practical in hospital settings, they may not be useful in military settings, or remote locations where an emergency technician is needed.

Neuro Kinetics, Inc. is made up of a team of brain experts that develop biomedical treatments and therapies to treat patients suffering from mild to severe brain injuries. Importantly, they understand the need for non-invasive tests and treatments to ensure the patient is comfortable. Their goal is to minimize the time it takes to determine the root cause of the mTBI in order to maximize the effectiveness of treatment plans.

Their development consists of a tool to quickly test for an mTBI. It consists of a virtual reality screen that generates a visual stimulus for the patient. This stimulus moves towards and away from the patient in different angular positions in order to measure eye and pupil movements to detect abnormalities in coordination. The screen also includes two cameras to record these movements. A laptop is coupled to the headset to acquire the data for evaluation. This portable device allows physicians to accurately diagnose mTBIs with the data obtained, making diagnosis quick and convenient, allowing treatment to start as soon as possible for patients, giving them the best chance at recovery.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
