Tennessee Patent of the Month – December 2022

Active Implants LLC develops orthopedic implant solutions that complement the natural biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, allowing patients to maintain or return to an active lifestyle. As part of this mission, the company has patented a floating joint replacement device to better support recovery after knee surgery.

The knee has two menisci, each of which can become damaged. Once damaged, traditional practices for treating damaged knee cartilage is to perform a total knee replacement. These procedures are invasive, painful, and have extensive rehabilitation time. Active Implants’ solution is less traumatic and improves load bearing and joint function.

Their meniscus replacement is designed with a floating joint which interfaces with the tissue structure of the femur and tibia. The floating aspect simply means the prosthetic device is not anchored to the joint using a screw. This floating aspect minimizes permanent damage to the patient’s undamaged tibia or soft tissue. The implant effectively mimics the function of the natural meniscus and redistributes loads transmitted across the knee joint. By addressing the damaged meniscus without further damaging other components of the knee, Active Implants’ floating joint reduces the recovery time without losing the effective results of the knee replacement surgery.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
