Texas Patent of the Month – August 2024
Transfolio, LLC is a metaverse technology company focused on bringing ultra-realistic 3D eyes to metahumans. The company was recently granted a patent for their eye color modeling technology which brings new levels of realism.
Their method leverages refraction data and mesh data to align and create detailed models of the iris, capturing the complexity of how light interacts with its unique structure. By calculating refraction points—specific points where light bends—and combining them with melanin information, the system accurately simulates how iris color forms based on biological factors like melanin absorption and light scattering.
What sets this invention apart is its dynamic use of multiple lighting conditions to model how an iris would look under varying environments. This capability ensures that the eye model responds in real time to changes in light, offering a true-to-life appearance. The incorporation of Monte Carlo simulations to track light rays adds further precision, helping to account for the subtle variations in color caused by refraction through different layers of the iris.
At its core, this system integrates scientific concepts such as Mie scattering and anisotropy of scattering functions to model light behavior, allowing it to replicate the fine details of human eyes, down to the interplay between melanin concentration and color formation. This technology has wide-ranging applications, from realistic avatars in virtual environments to advanced medical imaging that enhances eye-related diagnoses.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
