Alaska Invention Index – February 2025

As we continue our national overview of innovation, the Swanson Reed Invention Index turns to Alaska this month. While other regions may have seen a surge in patents and inventions, February 2025 marked a quiet month for Alaska. No new utility patents or inventions were filed during this period.

This quietness, however, should not be interpreted as a lack of innovation. Alaska, known for its unique challenges and opportunities in areas like energy, environmental solutions, and subsistence technology, often sees innovation unfold in waves. Patent filings may not always keep pace with the creative work being done on the ground—sometimes, the breakthrough moments are in their early stages, working toward commercialization.

The rhythm of innovation in Alaska, influenced by factors such as geographic constraints and industry-specific cycles, can be unpredictable. In many cases, the groundwork for significant patents is laid months or even years before the filing takes place.

At Swanson Reed, we understand that patent activity is only one piece of the broader innovation puzzle. For businesses and entrepreneurs in Alaska, the right strategies, including R&D tax incentives and intellectual property protection, can lead to transformative results down the line.

Stay tuned as we track future developments and the inventive spirit that drives Alaska’s economy forward.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
