Hawaii Patent of the Month – February 2025
While no major patents emerged this month, innovation continues behind the scenes across industries. Research and development cycles often experience natural lulls, with breakthroughs sometimes taking longer to materialize into filed patents. This pause offers an opportunity to reflect on how innovation unfolds—not always in headline-grabbing leaps, but often through incremental refinements and collaborative problem-solving.
Industry analysts note that temporary dips in patent filings don’t necessarily indicate slowed progress. Many companies and research institutions use these periods to refine prototypes, conduct additional testing, or explore broader applications for existing technologies. In fields like biotechnology, AI, and clean energy, some of the most impactful advancements arise from extended development phases rather than rapid patent turnover.
For now, the focus shifts to upcoming conferences, unpublished research, and partnerships that may soon yield the next wave of patentable innovations. Observers are watching areas like generative AI integration, next-gen battery tech, and precision medicine—all poised for significant developments in the coming months. The absence of new patents this month isn’t a slowdown; it’s the quiet before the next evolution.
What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
