Arizona Patent of the Month – May 2025

U.S. Patent No. 12303134, titled ‘Systems for aneurysm treatment’, introduces a novel approach to treating abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). The patent details a minimally invasive system designed to stabilize aneurysms before they reach critical size. This innovation could offer a proactive alternative to the traditional “”watch-and-wait”” strategy.

How It Works

The patented system employs a dual-balloon catheter to deliver a stabilizing agent directly into the aneurysmal wall. This agent, pentagalloyl glucose (PGG), binds to structural proteins, potentially strengthening the vessel and slowing aneurysm growth. The procedure is designed to be completed in under an hour, requires no permanent implant, and leaves future treatment options open.

Real-World Impact

AAAs are a significant health concern, with over a million Americans affected and approximately 10,000 deaths annually. Current interventions are typically reserved for larger aneurysms, leaving smaller ones under surveillance. This new system aims to fill that treatment gap, offering early intervention to reduce the risk of rupture.

Clinical Progress

The technology is currently undergoing clinical evaluation in the stAAAble trial, focusing on patients with AAAs measuring 3.5 to 5.0 cm. If successful, this could mark a significant shift in how small to mid-sized aneurysms are managed.
