Minnesota Patent of the Month – August 2025
Video games just got a lot more personal. A new patent granted to Solsten, Inc. reveals a system that uses player behavior to understand their psychological makeup. The technology, described in U.S. Patent No. 12377352, titled ‘Systems and methods to correlate user behavior patterns within an online game with psychological attributes of users’, correlates in-game actions with psychological profiles. It could change how games are designed. Developers can create more engaging, tailored experiences for every player. The system learns about users’ motivations and personalities. It adapts the game to fit each person’s unique style.
How It Works
The system starts by grouping players into different psychological cohorts. It bases this on answers to questions about personality and motivation. Next, it tracks in-game actions, like purchases or quest completions. It then determines a correlation between these actions and the players’ psychological profiles. For example, a tendency to form alliances might correlate with a specific psychological trait. This allows the game to customize recommendations or difficulty settings. It also helps tailor content for individual users. The system can even predict psychological attributes for new users without asking them questions. It learns from their initial behavior patterns. This creates a deeply personalized experience from the very start.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
