Massachusetts Patent of the Month – September 2025
A cutting-edge biotherapeutic method has been patented for treating hyperoxaluria, a metabolic disorder that drives kidney stone formation. Biotechnology firm Tenza Inc. has secured U.S. Patent No. 12421518, titled ‘Methods and compositions for treating hyperoxaluria,’ confirming their innovative use of engineered bacteria. This novel approach transforms probiotic gut microbes into living pharmaceutical factories.
Microbes as Medicine
The invention uses common commensal bacteria harvested from the human gut microbiome. Scientists genetically modify these microbes with specific transgenes from different organisms, including yeast and other bacteria. These modifications supercharge the microbes’ ability to break down oxalate—the toxic compound responsible for the disease. Once administered, the engineered bacteria live in the digestive tract. They intercept and degrade excess oxalate before the body can absorb it. This drastically reduces the toxic load on the kidneys.
Impact on Kidney Health
Hyperoxaluria affects thousands and can lead to recurrent calcium oxalate kidney stones and eventual end-stage renal disease. Traditional treatment options are limited. Tenza’s patented method offers a highly targeted and biological solution. It leverages synthetic biology within the body’s natural environment. This innovation promises a paradigm shift in treating metabolic diseases through programmed microbiota.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
