Maine and the R&D Tax Credit
Maine offers two permanent research tax credits for corporations and flow-through entities conducting qualifying activities within the state. The Research Expense Tax Credit (5219-K) provides a fifteen-year carryforward and offsets 100% of the first $25,000 of tax liability, plus 75% of any excess, without reducing the total liability below zero. Supporting documentation is required. Alternatively, the Super Credit for Substantially Increased Research and Development (5219-L) features a five-year carryforward. It is strictly limited to 50% of the tax liability after other credits and cannot reduce the current year’s tax due below the previous year’s total liability.
