Massachusetts Patent of the Month – July 2025

A newly granted patent reveals a non-invasive method for rapid cancer detection. U.S. Patent No. 12374464, titled ‘Apparatus, systems, and methods for rapid cancer detection,’ details a system that analyzes metabolic imprints of cells. This technology aims to provide fast, accurate cancer diagnoses. The invention, assigned to 4D Path Inc., could revolutionize how doctors screen for cancer. It promises high sensitivity and specificity. The system may also work on rare or difficult-to-diagnose cases.

How it Works

The patented method uses an imaging system to capture thermal and thermodynamic properties of cells. It measures minute temperature differences. The system segments cells into nuclear and cellular regions. It then calculates a unique “information surface value” for each cell. These values create a diagnostic score. This score is mapped to a universal scale to determine the normality status of a tissue sample. The approach bypasses the need for traditional, often time-consuming, genetic or protein-based tests. It focuses on the metabolic changes in cells, a core principle of cancer.

Potential Real-World Impact

This invention holds promise for clinicians. It could provide real-time diagnostic results. The system may be integrated into handheld devices. This would allow for in-vivo testing, even during surgery. The technology could also help with a tricky task. It can identify cancer boundaries. This feature is crucial for surgical oncologists. The method’s ability to detect subtle, hard-to-see cases is a significant advancement. It offers a new tool for early, precise diagnosis and treatment.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
