Montana Patent of the Month – May 2025

Opio Connect Inc. has secured U.S. Patent No. 12293818 for a groundbreaking kiosk designed to dispense medications for opioid addiction treatment. This innovation aims to enhance accessibility and safety in administering opioid use disorder (OUD) therapies.

Revolutionizing OUD Treatment Delivery

The patented kiosk features a secure, temperature-controlled safe that stores medications like methadone and buprenorphine. Patients access their prescribed doses through a dispense structure, ensuring they cannot reach the medication compartment directly. A robotic manipulator selects and delivers the correct dosage, minimizing human error and potential misuse.

Ensuring Compliance Through Telemedicine

Inside the patient compartment, a video conferencing system allows healthcare professionals to supervise medication intake remotely. Integrated thermal imaging technology verifies ingestion by detecting temperature changes, reducing the risk of diversion. Biometric scanners authenticate patient identity, adding an extra layer of security.

Expanding Access to Underserved Areas

This kiosk supports a “hub-and-spoke” model, enabling Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) to extend their reach into rural and underserved communities. By facilitating remote supervision and secure dispensing, the system addresses barriers to treatment access, aligning with public health initiatives to combat the opioid crisis.

Enhancing Operational Efficiency

Beyond patient care, the kiosk includes surveillance cameras and biometric access controls for maintenance personnel, ensuring the integrity of the medication supply. This automation reduces the burden on healthcare staff, allowing them to focus more on patient interaction and less on logistical concerns.

With this patent, Opio Connect Inc. positions itself at the forefront of integrating technology into addiction treatment, offering scalable solutions to a pressing public health challenge.
