Nevada Patent of the Month – July 2025

FaceTec Inc. has secured U.S. Patent No. 12346423 for an ‘Authentication system’ that promises to enhance digital security. The invention aims to combat fraudulent access attempts. It uses a novel method for authenticating users via a mobile device’s camera. The system ensures that the person being imaged is a real, three-dimensional human, not a flat photograph or video. This approach could significantly boost the security of facial recognition technology on personal devices.

A New Layer of Security

The patent details a method for verifying a user’s face. The process involves the user moving their mobile device. The camera captures images at different distances. By analyzing how the user’s facial features change between a “close-up” and a “far-away” shot, the system can confirm the face has three-dimensional characteristics. This ‘perspective distortion’ check is a key innovation. It makes it extremely difficult to trick the system with a two-dimensional image. The technology could be integrated into various devices, from smartphones to IoT devices, providing a more reliable and secure way to log in to accounts.

Real-World Impact

This invention addresses a major weakness in existing facial recognition systems. Current methods are often vulnerable to simple attacks using photos or videos. By requiring a user to perform a specific movement with their device and analyzing the resulting perspective changes, FaceTec’s system adds a powerful new layer of defense. It offers a convenient, cost-effective solution for secure authentication. This could reduce reliance on cumbersome passwords. The technology could have a wide-reaching impact on digital security and identity verification across many industries.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
