North Dakota Patent of the Month – July 2025
Evolution Completions, Inc. has patented a new solution to a persistent industry challenge. The company’s U.S. Patent No. 12371962, titled ‘Debris exclusion tool, system and method,’ introduces a clever tool for well operations. This invention prevents debris from blocking critical pathways in well tubing. It promises to make well completion and maintenance more reliable. The new technology offers a simple and effective way to protect downhole components.
A Clearer Path for Operations
The patented tool features a simple design. It places a smaller tube inside the main well tubing. A special debris exclusion plug blocks the top of this inner tube. The plug directs falling debris into an outer space, or annulus. This keeps the path to a pump-out plug clear. This ensures well operators can reliably use pressure to remove the plug as intended. Some plugs even use a special material that dissolves over time.
This innovation eliminates a major operational headache. Debris accumulation previously made it difficult to activate well tools. The new system ensures reliable performance. It avoids the need for expensive, time-consuming debris removal operations. This makes well maintenance simpler and more efficient for the entire industry.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
