Ohio Patent of the Month – May 2025
A new patent may mark a turning point in surgical lighting. Lazurite Holdings LLC has secured U.S. Patent No. 12292164, titled ‘Light source’, covering its breakthrough in low-heat, high-efficiency medical lighting. The patented design powers the company’s Meridiem® light engine, which features in its FDA-cleared ArthroFree® wireless surgical camera.
Smarter lighting for safer surgery
Traditional surgical lighting generates high heat, increasing energy use and risk of patient burns. Lazurite’s system changes that. It operates at significantly lower temperatures—below 43°C—while maintaining surgical-grade brightness. The result is a safer operating room and reduced environmental load.
Laser-based innovation
The core of the invention is a compact laser-driven light source paired with a volumetric phosphor converter. This setup efficiently transforms concentrated laser light into broad-spectrum visible light. Unlike conventional LEDs or bulbs, this compact configuration supports sleek device integration without compromising performance.
Beyond the operating room
While developed for minimally invasive surgeries, the patented light source is adaptable across industries. Its low heat and energy-efficient design could be used in aerospace, industrial inspection, or remote robotics—any field where precision and reliability matter.
