Opterus Research and Development Inc. is revolutionizing how we deploy structures in extreme environments with its latest breakthrough in aerospace engineering. U.S. Patent No. 12553545, titled ‘Hybrid inflatable boom’, introduces a high-performance structural support that transitions from a compact roll to a rigid beam. This innovation solves the critical challenge of balancing lightweight storage with immense structural strength once deployed.
Structural Strength Meets Compact Design
Traditional space structures often struggle with the trade-off between portability and stability. The hybrid inflatable boom overcomes this by combining an inflatable tube with a series of longitudinal structural elements known as longerons. These longerons are held firmly in place by the pressure of the inflated tube. This configuration provides the axial and bending stiffness usually found in heavy, fixed trusses.
Innovative Folding Mechanisms
The patent describes a unique way to package the device for transport. In its flattened state, the longerons interleave within the folds of the undulating tube wall. This allows the entire assembly to be rolled into a tight cylinder. When air or gas enters the tube, the internal pressure forces the structure to expand and lock into its high-strength rigid form.
Real-World Impact and Versatility
This hybrid approach is a game-changer for satellite manufacturers and space exploration teams. It enables the launch of larger solar arrays and communication antennas on smaller, more cost-effective rockets. Beyond orbit, the technology could serve as a foundation for rapidly deployable emergency shelters or lightweight bridges in remote areas on Earth.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
