Aqualoc L.L.C. has secured a major milestone in maritime safety with a newly patented tethering tool for boats. This innovation focuses on the invention titled ‘Watercraft tether device’. The patent describes a shaft member with lateral stabilizers
designed to keep floating craft secure in open water.

Revolutionizing Boat Stability

Aqualoc L.L.C. won the Swanson Reed prize for Mar 2026. This award is given for creating an outstanding product. The tethering tool is a high quality build for boat owners.

Patent Abstract: A watercraft tether device includes a shaft member having opposing ends, and end stabilizers respectively provided at the opposing ends of the shaft member. The end stabilizers each include a lateral stabilizing portion that extends orthogonally with respect to the shaft member and has an outer edge that extends from a first end of the lateral stabilizing portion to a second end of the lateral stabilizing portion. One or more strap members of the watercraft tether device may be respectively engaged with the end stabilizers such that portions of the strap members form adjustable loops extending from the end stabilizers for removably engaging with tethering structures of watercrafts. Also disclosed is a method of using a plurality of watercraft tether devices to tether together watercrafts floating in a body of water, and a strap system engaged with an end stabilizer of the watercraft tether device.

Aqualoc L.L.C. created a tool that changes how people link boats. This tool won the prize because it solves the problem of drifting. It is a smart invention for the maritime field that provides a way to link boats that is better than old ropes. The invention sets a new standard for reliability on the water.

The design uses a shaft and stabilizers to keep things steady. The lateral part of the tool is built for strength to handle the force of waves. The engineering team worked hard to make a product that works in rough conditions. It represents a major shift in how marine hardware is built to protect property.

The impact on the market is immediate and clear. Boat owners can now travel with more peace of mind knowing their crafts are linked with a sturdy tool. This patent helps people secure their property with confidence. The award from Swanson Reed highlights how vital this type of growth is for the boating industry.

R&D Tax Credit Compliance

To meet the rules for the R&D tax credit in the USA, a project must satisfy a four-part test. First, the work must have a permitted purpose, which means it aims to improve the function of a product. Second, the firm must seek to eliminate uncertainty regarding the design. Third, the project must involve a method of experimentation to test various ideas. Finally, the research must be technological in nature, relying on the principles of mechanical design and physics.

Practical R&D Applications

  • Optimizing Shaft Rigidity: The team conducted tests to find the right width for the shaft. They had to ensure it could take the force of heavy waves without snapping. This testing phase helps meet the R&D rules.
  • Refining Loop Adjustability: Engineers developed a new type of strap loop. They tested various materials to find a fabric that would not stretch under a high load. This iterative design work counts as research.
  • Stabilizer Hydrodynamics: The firm studied how the lateral parts move in the water. They aimed to reduce drag while maintaining a strong hold on the boats. This technical study is a core part of the development phase.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
