A new lighting technology from QuarkStar could transform how we illuminate our homes and offices by providing unprecedented control over light distribution. U.S. Patent Application No. 20260052609, titled ‘Luminaires for spatial dimming’, reveals a sophisticated system designed to vary light intensity across different areas from a single fixture. This innovation moves beyond traditional dimming, which typically lowers the brightness of an entire room at once.
Precision Control Through Spatial Dimming
The patented technology uses a specialized optical design to steer and shape light with high precision. By combining multiple light sources with advanced waveguides, the luminaire can create specific patterns of brightness and shadow. This allows users to dim specific sections of a space while keeping other areas brightly lit. For example, a single ceiling fixture could provide bright task lighting over a desk while simultaneously maintaining a soft, dim glow in the rest of the room.
Enhanced Efficiency and User Experience
Spatial dimming offers significant benefits for both energy conservation and occupant comfort. Instead of wasting electricity on unoccupied corners of a room, the system directs light only where it is needed most. This targeted approach reduces overall power consumption without sacrificing visibility. Furthermore, the ability to customize light levels helps reduce glare and eye strain. By adapting to the specific needs of a workspace or living area, this technology promises a more dynamic and responsive environment.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
