Contrast Inc. recently received U.S. Patent No. 12556827, titled ‘Real-time HDR video for vehicle control’. This breakthrough allows self-driving cars to “see” clearly in extreme lighting conditions, such as driving into direct sunlight or exiting dark tunnels.

Current vehicle sensors often struggle with high-contrast environments. Bright glare can wash out images, while deep shadows hide potential hazards. The new system from Contrast Inc. utilizes multiple image sensors to capture different light levels simultaneously. It then merges these streams into a single high dynamic range (HDR) video feed. This ensures the vehicle’s computer always receives a clear and balanced view of the road.
Real-Time Processing Power
Speed is the most impressive feature of this invention. Traditional HDR techniques often require time-consuming processing that delays video playback. Contrast Inc. solves this by using a “pipeline” architecture. This method processes individual pixels as they arrive. The system does not need to wait for a full frame to finish. This zero-latency approach allows autonomous systems to make life-saving decisions in milliseconds.

Reliable vision is the foundation of safe autonomous transport. By eliminating motion blur and light saturation, this technology makes self-driving cars more predictable. What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit.
