Advanced navigation just took a massive leap forward as a new underwater sensing technology hits the maritime industry. FarSounder Inc. has secured a patent for a breakthrough system that uses artificial intelligence to identify subsea hazards in real time. This innovation promises to redefine safety for vessels navigating challenging or uncharted waters.
Smart Marine Navigation
The invention, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 12560707, titled ‘Three-dimensional forward-looking sonar target recognition with machine learning’, bridges the gap between raw data and actionable intelligence. Traditional sonar requires skilled operators to interpret complex screen echoes. This new method integrates a neural network to process 3D point cloud data automatically. It distinguishes between the seafloor and potential in-water threats like shipping containers or marine life.
Enhancing Global Maritime Safety
By training on vast sets of bathymetric surveys and sonar signals, the machine learning system achieves high accuracy. The technology provides a clear, three-dimensional view of what lies ahead of a vessel. It allows captains to make faster, more informed decisions to avoid collisions. This proactive approach protects both expensive maritime assets and fragile marine ecosystems from accidental groundings.
Real World Impact
The impact of this R&D reaches far beyond simple obstacle avoidance. This automated recognition software reduces the cognitive load on bridge crews during long voyages. As autonomous ships become more common, such reliable AI-driven sensing will be essential for safe operation. This Rhode Island-based innovation marks a significant milestone in the evolution of intelligent ocean exploration.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
