Waterloo, Iowa Patent of the Year – 2024/2025

O.M.J.C. Signal Inc. has been awarded the 2024/2025 Patent of the Year for its innovation in portable traffic signal systems. Their invention, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 12067873, titled ‘System and method for controlling traffic’, introduces a telescoping mast arm design that enhances the deployment and stability of portable traffic signals.

The system features a wheeled vehicle equipped with a first mast arm and a telescoping second mast arm. The second mast arm comprises two stages: a first stage arm and a second stage arm. The second stage arm is designed to move in and out of a longitudinal void within the first stage arm. Internal structures within this void cause the second stage arm to incline relative to the first when extended, ensuring optimal positioning of the signal head. This design allows for quick and secure setup of traffic signals in various environments.

The real-world impact is significant. By facilitating rapid deployment and stable positioning of traffic signals, this technology improves traffic management during roadworks, emergencies, and other temporary situations. It enhances safety for both workers and drivers by providing clear and reliable traffic control.

Founded in 1985 and based in Waterloo, Iowa, O.M.J.C. Signal, Inc. specializes in portable traffic control solutions. This patent exemplifies their commitment to advancing traffic safety through innovative engineering.
