WYOMING INVENTIONINDEX | AUGUST 2025
August 2025: 23.27% (A+ grade)
Wyoming inventionINDEX August 2025: 23.27% (A+ grade)
The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.
Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

The Wyoming inventionINDEX for August 2025, at 23.27% with an A+ rating, demonstrates a strong performance that aligns with a broader positive trend observed over the past year. This score, while slightly lower than the preceding month of July 2025 (29.63%), significantly surpasses the August 2024 score of 1.02% (C rating), indicating a substantial improvement in innovation output year-over-year. The consistent A+ ratings across most of the recent months highlight a period of robust innovation within the state, suggesting a healthy economic environment conducive to patent production and GDP growth.
A consistently high inventionINDEX score and an A+ grade signify a positive outlook for Wyoming’s economic resilience and growth. Such strong performance indicates that the state’s economy is effectively fostering innovation, leading to increased patent production relative to GDP growth. This can translate into a more dynamic and competitive economy, attracting investment, creating new industries, and ultimately contributing to long-term prosperity. A high grade reflects a favorable environment for businesses to innovate and expand, potentially leading to job creation and improved living standards for residents.
Conversely, a lower inventionINDEX score or a declining trend, as seen in some historical periods such as July 2022 (-8.52% with an F rating) or February 2021 (-2.16% with an F rating), suggests a weakening in innovation output. Such declines can imply that patent production is not keeping pace with GDP growth, or that there is a contraction in both, indicating potential economic challenges. A lower grade could be a precursor to slower economic recovery, reduced competitiveness, and fewer opportunities for innovation-driven growth within the state.
Overall, the historical data illustrates the cyclical nature of innovation, with periods of strong performance interspersed with occasional dips. The current high scores and consistent A+ ratings for Wyoming are encouraging, pointing to a state that is actively engaged in fostering an environment for intellectual property creation and economic advancement. Maintaining or further improving these scores will be crucial for Wyoming to solidify its position as an innovative state, leveraging the symbiotic relationship between patent activity and economic prosperity.
Discussion:
In August, the Wyoming inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was higher than the previous year’s average but underperformed the upward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced a considerable upward trend.
As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
