Mississippi Patent of the Month – March 2021
Surgical fluids can be used in different ways depending on the temperature and composition. For instance, saline solutions in a body temperature, liquid form are used to flush blood and bodily matter to help clear the surgeon’s view. The same solution can be used for a localized hypothermia if it is in a cold, slush form. The temperature for this slush is crucial, as a temperature too low can harm the organs, and a temperature too high will not be effective. Microtek Medical, Inc. has designed a device capable of heating or cooling surgical fluids and keeping track of the total volume introduced into the patient.
A subsidiary of EcoLab, Microtek Medical specializes in the use of water, hygiene and infection prevention solutions in the medical field. Their device resembles a patient sink you might see at a dentist’s office, without any taps. The nurse or clinician in charge of fluids adds fluids to the device, which weighs the total fluid and determines and tracks volume by density. As fluid is removed and delivered to the patient, the device tracks this difference to produce a running total of volume delivered. A thermal treatment device is coupled to the basin and configured to raise or lower the temperature. An interface system allows the nurse or clinician to specify the desired temperature. This device will enhance the accuracy and efficiency of surgical procedures, helping to improve patient care.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
