Vermont Patent of the Month – November 2022

Omega Optical, LLC specializes in filters for OEM customers around the globe. This pioneer in optical film manufacturing has grown since their founding in 1969, conducting continuous development and innovation in the realm of optical technology.

Tinted windows contribute to energy efficiency, reducing heat loss from buildings during winters and minimizing heat load into buildings during the summer. Unfortunately, this tinting limits the ability for most photovoltaic (PV) cells to generate power from the light blocked by this tinting. Omega Optical has developed a color neutral solar PV window that supports these energy efficiency initiatives while increasing solar power generation from the incident light.

The design is a solar window system that enables light to be partially transparent in the visible spectrum. Any remaining light that is incident on the solar window is converted to electrical power. The design ensures this incident light appears color neutral to anyone looking through the window so that it does not impact their vision.

This is achieved using a series of layers including a transparent conductive oxide layer, hole transport oxide layer, perovskite absorber layer, and an electron transport layer. Each layer works together to provide this color-neutral transmission of light. The perovskite layer supports the generation of electrical power from the incident light. This window enhances on energy efficient styles, bringing greater capability to solar windows everywhere.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
