Nebraska Patent of the Month – April 2023

Inductors are a vital component in many electronic devices, providing resistance to changes in electric current passing through them. However, due to their reliance on magnetic fields, they can produce electric and magnetic fields that can interfere with other electronic components. Vishay Dale Electronics, Inc. has developed an efficient and effective solution to this problem: the shielded inductor.

The shielded inductor comprises a core body and a shield covering the body. An optional insulating material is provided between the core body and the shield to reduce interference from electromagnetic and other electrical fields. This shield provides protection from electromagnetic fields by reducing the exposed portions of the core body, without taking up space within the inductor body.

Vishay’s shielded inductor is easy to manufacture and has a relatively proportional size compared to the body of the inductor. It also includes various extensions that extend along the inductor core body to both provide shielding and to secure the shield to the inductor core body.

The method for producing a shielded inductor includes pressure molding magnetic material around a wire coil to form a core body and to bond the wound coils to each other to form a coil. The shield is produced by stamping and forming sheets into the shape that covers the molded core body. The shield is then placed on the pressed powder inductor in order to cover the exposed edges of the core body. Tabs are formed around the side of the inductor opposite the shield to fasten the shield to the core body.

Vishay has provided an innovative solution to the problem of electromagnetic interference with inductors. The shielded inductor offers an efficient and effective solution that is easy to manufacture and has a relatively proportional size compared to the body of the inductor. This innovation is a testament to the company’s dedication to providing the best solutions for electronic devices.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
