Ohio Patent of the Month – June 2023
Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is an innovative treatment method that utilizes light to address various ocular disorders and diseases. However, traditional PBMT devices have failed to address an important concern: light pollution. Specifically, the blue component of white light can be detrimental to the eye and brain. Multi Radiance Medical, a pioneering company in the field, has developed a cutting-edge system to combat this issue and enhance the effectiveness of PBMT.
The novel system is designed to deliver light with a homogeneous and uniform density directly into the patient’s eye while simultaneously preventing blue light from entering. This is achieved through a combination of advanced components and innovative engineering.
At the core of the system is a PBMT device equipped with an array of light delivery devices, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or laser diodes. These devices are arranged on a printed circuit board with uniform spacing to ensure consistent light distribution. The PBMT device is powered by a controller, which can be integrated into the device itself, housed in a strap in proximity to the device, or external to it. The controller consists of a power source, a processor, and a non-transitory memory, enabling effective communication with the PBMT device through wired or wireless connections.
To further enhance the system’s performance, the PBMT device incorporates a lens with ridges that serve as heat sinks for the light delivery devices. This ensures that the generated light remains at an optimal temperature, contributing to the longevity and reliability of the device. Moreover, an antimicrobial material is embedded within the lens, providing an added layer of protection and hygiene.
Light pollution is effectively addressed through the implementation of MYLAR sheets within the PBMT device. These sheets act as filters, blocking blue light from the white light emitted by the device. By doing so, the system safeguards the patient’s eye from potential damage caused by blue light exposure.
Additionally, the system features a flexible metallic ring that conforms the printed circuit board and the lens to the patient’s eye socket. This not only ensures a secure and comfortable fit but also enables precise light direction through the patient’s eye and into the pupil.
The system’s versatility is demonstrated by its capability to cover both eyes of the patient. By connecting a second PBMT device, the treatment can be simultaneously administered to both eyes, optimizing efficiency and convenience. It is engineered to be dust-tight and waterproof, ensuring its reliability and durability in various environments.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
