Vermont Patent of the Month – August 2023

SOOS, LLC has made a name for itself as an affordable, easy-to-integrate Software Composition Analysis and Dynamic Application Security Testing solution. This industry requires continuous development and innovation to stay ahead of any risks. In line with this, the company has recently patented a system for automated malicious software detection.

With the rise of open-source software repositories, vulnerabilities have emerged, as hackers exploit the system by introducing look-alike packages and libraries that closely resemble authentic counterparts, often with slight typographical variations.

SOOS’ inventive system for automated malicious software detection addresses these new threats at their source. At its core, this cutting-edge system is designed to analyze and differentiate between legitimate software components and malicious imitations, thereby enhancing overall cybersecurity.

The heart of the technology lies in its ability to understand metadata differences and correlations. When a software component is received, containing vital software metadata such as component names, the system springs into action. It obtains a source repository, which is a vital database of source metadata. Through a series of advanced calculations, the system identifies the string distance between the software component’s metadata and the source metadata.

By generating a malicious machine-learning model, trained on malicious identifiers and metadata differences, the system gains the prowess to spot nefarious elements with accuracy. This empowers the system to quantify the maliciousness of software components and their sources.

The potential applications of SOOS’ innovation are immense. This automated system promises to significantly elevate the security of open-source software repositories, protecting both developers and users from potential threats. Its ability to detect even subtle variations and common typing errors in package names showcases its sophistication.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
