Utah Patent of the Month – January 2024

In the ever-evolving landscape of viral containment, a new approach by SINTX Technologies, Inc. is taking center stage. With the ongoing global challenges posed by viruses like SARS-CoV-2, the need for effective, long-lasting antiviral solutions has never been more critical.

SINTX’s inventive method revolves around the strategic use of silicon nitride powder, a material known for its exceptional properties, ranging from strength to biocompatibility. The method provides a comprehensive approach to inactivating human viruses, presenting a game-changing advancement in the realm of antiviral technology.

The core of the invention lies in the meticulous composition of the silicon nitride powder, finely tuned to a concentration between 1 wt. % and 30 wt. %. The powder’s average particle size, ranging from 0.6 μm to 5 μm, plays a crucial role in its efficacy. When integrated into or coated onto various surfaces, such as protective gowns, masks, or even furniture like handles and rails, the silicon nitride engages in a dual-action process.

Upon contact with the virus, the silicon nitride successively binds to it, creating a powerful interaction that sets the stage for the second phase—inactivation. The inventive method showcases remarkable results, achieving an inactivation rate of at least 99%, a testament to its efficacy against a wide array of human viruses, excluding SARS-CoV-2.

What makes this invention even more versatile is its adaptability to different materials. Objects incorporating this method can be made of paper, cardboard, fabric, plastic, ceramic, stainless steel, metal, or a combination thereof. This flexibility expands the potential applications of the invention across various industries, from healthcare to everyday items.

Notably, the SINTX invention introduces a safe and practical solution for viral inactivation. Unlike traditional methods relying on chemical applications or UV irradiation, the silicon nitride-based approach minimizes toxicity concerns, making it a promising option for widespread use.

As the world continues its battle against viral threats, SINTX Technologies emerges as a pioneer, providing a revolutionary invention that not only captures attention in the field of research and development but also holds the promise of transforming how we approach viral containment in our daily lives.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
