Georgia Patent of the Month – March 2024
The need for effective medication management has always been critical, especially considering the alarming statistics surrounding medication errors, adverse drug events, and non-compliance. Viva Life, Inc., an innovative leader in healthcare solutions, has developed a new approach to address these challenges head-on.
This newly patented smart pill box effectively organizes and tracks medication, designed to revolutionize how patients manage their medication schedules. The pill box features a series of compartments, each equipped with an access door and a sensor element capable of detecting door openings. A memory element and processor work in tandem, allowing the pill box to read medication dosage schedules and trigger alarms if doses are missed.
What sets this invention apart is its seamless integration with modern technology. With an interface to smartphones, the processor can send alarms directly to users, ensuring timely medication reminders. Additionally, a display device provides visual alerts, enhancing accessibility for users of all ages and backgrounds.
The pill box also offers advanced services such as filling instructions and medication administration guidance. By leveraging sensor technology, the apparatus confirms medication placement and removal from compartments, reducing the risk of errors and improving patient outcomes.
The inspiration behind this invention stems from a pressing need in healthcare to combat medication-related challenges. With medication errors claiming thousands of lives each year and non-compliance costing billions, Viva Life recognized the urgent need for a comprehensive solution.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
