Maine Patent of the Month – May 2024

Innovation is at the heart of eyeThera LLC‘s latest breakthrough in ocular protection technology. Introducing a cutting-edge ocular protection device, this invention offers a novel solution to safeguarding the eyes during various medical and aesthetic procedures, specifically those targeting the eyelids.

The device features a corneal shield designed to fit comfortably underneath the eyelids, paired with a unique handle that protrudes between closed lids. This design allows operators to control the shield effectively without obstructing their view or access to the eyelids. The inclusion of a hinge in the handle, offset from the shield, ensures that the shield stays in place while the operator manages the treatment area.

One of the key applications of this device is in the treatment of Meibomian gland dysfunction, a common cause of dry eye syndrome. The process involves using the ocular protection device to shield the eye, applying heat to the eyelid to soften obstructions in the glands, and then applying pressure to express these blockages. The handle’s design allows for precise manipulation, ensuring the shield remains stable while the eyelid is treated, preventing discomfort or damage to the eye.

This innovative device is made from materials that insulate against electrical and thermal energy, providing robust protection during procedures involving radiofrequency, intense pulsed light, or other heating methods. With a handle long enough to allow unobstructed access and a hinge that facilitates movement, the device represents a significant advancement in ocular safety and treatment efficiency.

EyeThera LLC’s ocular protection device exemplifies the company’s commitment to enhancing patient care through innovative design, ensuring both effective treatment and maximum comfort. This invention not only addresses current needs in ophthalmology but also sets a new standard for eye protection in medical procedures.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
