Connecticut Patent of the Month – August 2024

Spine Wave, Inc. has pioneered an innovative approach to enhancing medical implants through advanced surface texturing. Their cutting-edge technology focuses on improving osseointegration, the process where living bone integrates with an implant, by refining the surface topography of implants. This breakthrough involves a meticulously designed textured tissue contact surface that incorporates both macroscale and microscale features, along with intricate nanostructures.

The process begins with creating a roughened surface on the implant using nanosecond pulsed lasers. This stage establishes a foundation of macro and micro projections and recesses, crucial for initial bone contact. Following this, femtosecond pulsed lasers are employed to introduce nanostructures onto the surface. These nanostructures, characterized by elongated waves and polygonal shapes, further refine the texture without disrupting the underlying macro and micro structures.

This dual-laser approach allows for a precise control over the surface’s texture, enhancing the implant’s ability to promote bone growth. For instance, the elongated waves and polygonal structures provide an optimal scaffold for bone cells to adhere and proliferate, potentially leading to better integration and stability of the implant. The unique combination of roughened macrostructures with intricate nanoscale features is designed to surpass the capabilities of traditional surface treatments.

The texturing technique is applicable to a range of implants, including spinal interbody fusion devices, knee and hip prostheses, and dental implants. By optimizing the implant surface with this advanced technology, Spine Wave is setting a new standard for implant integration and longevity, addressing one of the significant challenges in implant-based medical treatments.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
