Hawaii Patent of the Month – August 2024
Oceanit Laboratories, Inc. has pioneered a transformative approach to enhancing the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries by developing a novel nanostructured separator. This innovation utilizes electrospun high-temperature polymer nanofibers, primarily composed of polybenzimidazole (PBI), to create a robust and thermally stable membrane. The process involves compressing mats of these nanofibers and infiltrating them with additional polymers, such as silicone, to precisely control the pore size and improve the separator’s mechanical properties.
This advanced separator not only withstands extreme temperatures, but also significantly reduces the risk of battery failures, such as thermal runaway, which has plagued traditional battery designs. The result is a high-performance, durable separator that can be tailored for various applications, including electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
By addressing critical issues like porosity and chemical stability, Oceanit’s invention marks a significant leap forward in battery technology, offering enhanced safety and longevity for next-generation energy solutions.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
