Minnesota Patent of the Month – August 2024

4C Medical Technologies, Inc. has designed a single valve prosthetic heart meant to redefine how heart valve dysfunctions are treated. Unlike traditional solutions that replace the entire valve and physically interact with the native valve leaflets, this innovative device is designed to anchor within the left atrium without disturbing the natural valve structure.

The prosthetic valve is composed of an expandable anchoring structure and a unique single-leaflet design. This leaflet, positioned above the native valve annulus, operates as a one-way valve, preventing retrograde blood flow back into the left atrium while allowing forward flow into the left ventricle. The single leaflet’s simple yet effective mechanism ensures that blood flows smoothly, mimicking the natural function of the mitral valve with greater efficiency and less complexity.

One of the standout features of this device is its ability to progressively take over the function of the native mitral valve leaflets without replacing them entirely. This approach not only preserves some of the natural valve’s function but also minimizes the risk of complications associated with full valve replacement. The design is especially advantageous for patients whose native valve still retains some function but requires assistance to prevent backflow and manage blood flow effectively.

This prosthetic valve is also easier to deliver and position compared to traditional two-chamber solutions, which often involve complex anchoring systems and multiple components extending into the left ventricle. By focusing solely on the atrial chamber, 4C Medical’s design reduces procedural risks and potential trauma, offering a less invasive yet highly effective alternative for treating mitral valve regurgitation.

4C Medical Technologies’ prosthetic mitral valve device represents a significant advancement in heart valve treatment, providing a safer, more efficient solution for patients with dysfunctional mitral valves.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
