Montana Patent of the Month – August 2024
Microbion Corporation is treating wounds with a proprietary bismuth-thiol (BT) compound. This innovative approach offers new hope for the treatment of complex wounds, particularly those caused by diabetic foot infections (DFIs), which often lead to severe complications like amputations.
The core of this invention lies in a topical pharmaceutical composition containing microparticles of a BT compound. When applied directly to the wound, these microparticles deliver potent antimicrobial properties, addressing both bacterial and fungal pathogens that thrive in chronic wound environments. This method not only targets common culprits like Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA but also tackles the persistent biofilms that make infections hard to treat.
Unlike traditional antibiotic treatments, which can suffer from poor vascularization in infected tissues, Microbion’s solution is applied directly to the wound, ensuring therapeutic concentrations at the infection site. This targeted approach minimizes the risk of antibiotic resistance, which is a growing concern in today’s medical landscape.
Clinical outcomes have shown remarkable promise. With regular application, wounds can heal in as little as 12 weeks, reducing wound size significantly and, in some cases, completely eliminating the infection. The method also shows potential in preventing amputations, a common outcome for patients with severe DFIs. Microbion’s innovation is a major advancement, offering a more effective and direct means of managing and healing chronic wounds.
