Nebraska Patent of the Month – August 2024
Adjuvance Technologies, Inc. and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center have secured a patent for their triterpene saponin analogues. The analogues have applications in immunology, offering a new alternative to alum in vaccine formulation.
This compound, based on a modified QS-21 saponin structure, addresses long-standing challenges with traditional adjuvants like alum, which limits vaccine efficacy. Adjuvance’s invention provides an innovative solution for vaccines targeting a range of serious diseases, including Hepatitis B, pneumococcus, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and Lyme disease.
The new compound is designed to be used in a pharmaceutical composition that boosts the immune response by combining it with an antigen. Its enhanced properties stem from modifications to the core saponin structure, allowing for better stability, reduced toxicity, and improved effectiveness in lower doses. This advancement makes it particularly useful for vaccines where higher doses of QS-21 have been known to cause side effects.
This breakthrough has the potential to significantly impact global vaccination efforts. By improving vaccine potency and safety, Adjuvance’s invention could help reduce the number of doses required for immunization, making vaccines more accessible and efficient. The compound is a promising candidate in the fight against infectious diseases, offering a new tool for vaccine development with broad applications.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
